According to the European Employment Rights Act 1996, an employee is dismissed by reason of redundancy if the dismissal is wholly or mainly attributable to the fact that the employer ceases to carry on the business in which the employee was employed, or ceases to carry on that business in the place where the employee was employed. A redundancy will also occur when the business need for employees to carry out a particular kind of work has ceased or diminished.

So it’s clear your do not become redundant your job does.

Of course no money or great stories compensates for the shock of someone

losing their job , after all it had been a way of life for you with some good friends who now may drift to a different path.

But you must now grasp this change there are many who will say that redundancy has been the best thing that has ever happened to them, who are now enjoying great success, doing something they really like, operating at their own pace, making there own decisions and earning a lot more money for themselves and their family, and most of all never letting the horror of redundancy happen to them again.

Banks in the UK say those who avail of franchising opportunities are the most successful start they are and by a distance.

It is because of the ongoing support and back up of the franchisor, who has a tried and tested formula to run the business, so the risk is significantly less.

Taking an opportunity in Franchising is a great way to achieve business success there are so many franchises to choose from, the choices are from, working local, husband and wife teams, father and sons, or on your own, Management Franchises are coming fast for the white collar.

So is it that this redundancy has presented you with a great chance to tackle that notion you have always flirted with of working for yourself, a chance for a change to do something new with the freedom that self employment brings

Of course it has. It has also given you choice, but YOU HAVE GOT TO TAKE IT. I know many who have taken that leap, but I must say I know not one who has gone back.

See Part 2 for steps you should take before entering into business.

For those who believe no proof is necessary

For those who do not believe no proof will suffice.

Redundancy can be your route to franchise opportunities.

This is a story of two English Shoe Salesmen Fred and Ben.

Both were sent to Africa to evaluate the market for Shoe Sales. Representing two different Companies both visited within weeks of each other.

Fred’s Survey took one day, sending a telegram home, he wrote I have seen all I want to see here and I am returning home. No Africans wear shoes here it is normal and acceptable to walk barefoot so I return home tomorrow there is no market.

Bens Survey was much more brief and only took 3 hours, he too wrote home, only to say I will stay here for as long as possible, can you send me as many samples as you can, I will need help this is an absolute gem of a market nobody has shoes or wears shoes we will make a fortune.

Fred’s Story on his return home was deemed to be true and that is how he believed it, a view that was accepted by his Superiors. Fred and his Company will not be selling shoes in Africa.

Ben’s Story is also true his company did send the samples to Africa and it became a very big market for the company.

When Ben meets Fred at the annual shoe convention the story will go.

Fred - I hear you have been doing a bit down in Africa we had a look, it is not our cup of tea, of course your product style is different than ours, but it is a brave move by you. Africans do not buy shoes they like to go bare footed.

Ben – They do not have product style, they have no styles to compare we sell them shoes because I saw they had nothing on their feet.

Fred’s story is believable until you hear Ben’s. But if you do not hear Bens story You will accept Fred’s lie as real.

The great difference between Ben and Fred is Ben is a Real and True Entrepreneur. Ben saw a positive opportunity when Negative Fred saw no opportunity at all, yet both surveyed the same situation.

Many years ago down a main street in Dublin I headed to a couple of phone boxes to make a call, one box was empty and a queue of about five or six people had formed at the other, in front of me a women headed for the empty call box when she was beckoned by the second on the queue telling her that the phone there was not working, so she took her place on the queue.

Not fancying the wait I headed for the empty phone box when the same person beckoned me, I ignored the call and went into the box I pushed all the buttons and some coins popped out and the sound of call tone happened, I successfully made my call, when I finished the guy with the big mouth gave me an earful saying I should have let the next person use the phone first.

So the message and there are many in this little story is-

I was a participant not an observer

I was a player, not a fan and I was the only one who believed the phone might work.

I was optimistic and above all I was not afraid to be wrong in front of the mouth and the rest of the people on the queue I did not care what he thought it’s none of his business if I go to the empty phone.

FEAR IS NOT REAL you the person create it.

So even in the slightest situation the Entrepreneur is still at work he makes his life easy the people on the queue were sheep following a fool. Every positive move you make in life will be met by ten negative ones as this is the purpose of the negative and the challenge for the positive. Stop do not be different than me, do not do better than me, we should all stay together THAT’S THE NEGATIVE ,THEY LIVE IN FEAR and the big concern is they can make great sense of it,

Tell your neighbour you are moving to a bigger house or a work colleague that you are changing job and just wait for the negative reaction keep your ears open when others are making changes and hear the same negative reactions. Avoid loud, aggressive and negative fools and do not be lead by them, there are plenty around you

The link below highlights a great and true story of Ray Kroc who at 52 years old took the McDonald food chain from one shop in 1954 and now there 31,000 outlets worldwide so its never to late to believe

Spring is in the air. And if you haven’t done so already, you’re probably thinking about dusting off the patio furniture, golf clubs, lawn mower, toolbox and a number of other items in your garage in preparation of the season’s change. Before you get too carried away, you may want to consider organising a few key items before your garage ends up in shambles.

We did a little digging and found three unique ways to get things organised in your garage.

Start with an Outline

“Honey, where’s the hammer/measuring tape/nails/pliers/level/screwdriver?” Have you heard this question before, or a variation of it? Here’s a cool tip fromMarthaStewart.com. Hang your tools on a wall or pegboard. Then outline each tool with a permanent marketer. Afterwards you’ll aways know where to put it back, and no more time will be wasted looking for lost tools. But what about the smaller items? Superglue the lids from old glass jars onto a wooden shelf. Place small items like nails, nuts, bolts, etc. into the jars and screw the them onto the superglued lids.

Bungee It Up

Here’s a cool and easy tip we found on Pinterest.com. This is particularly helpful if you have a sports-fueled family. Organise your sports equipment with bungee cords! Basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, can now all be organized in one place. Plus, it’s easy to access for pick-ups games and spontaneous play.

Accessorise and Categorise

This idea comes from a blog calledIHeartOrganizing, so you know it has to be good. This organisational tip requires a bit more elbow grease in the sense of time, sorting, categorising, labeling, etc. However, once completed, your garage will be your new favorite place. What you’ll need most with this tip is time, patience and a little creativity.

What do you think of these three organizational tips? Need more intel on how to make your garage glimmer? Check out our Garage Organization page.

Remodeling a bathroom means making a lot of choices about materials and design. During a remodel, most people eventually choose to add tile to their bathroom. Tile is especially suited to bathrooms because of its look, versatility, and durability. There are many ways to use tile creatively in a bathroom remodel for floors, showers, and countertops.

Choosing Tile

Choosing tile may be the hardest decision of the entire bathroom remodel process because there are so many different varieties to choose from. There are several factors to consider when picking out tile that will help you choose the right tile for your needs.

First, consider where the tile will be used. It is important to consult a licensed contractor when using heavier tiles like marble, slate or stone to make sure there is adequate structure to support their weight. Ceramic and mosaic tiles have more versatility and can be used throughout a bathroom. Homeowners should also consider installation. Floor tiles require an even surface and mosaic tiles take considerable patience and pre-planning to install correctly. Professional tile installers can help make a tile installation go smoothly and last longer.

Tile Floors

Tile floors in bathrooms can set the tone of a room and bring a spa-like quality to one of the most used rooms in the house. Depending on tile selection and design, they can unify the decor of the entire room.

Homeowners can create a uniform design with large monochromatic tiles. Large slate or quarry tiles can make a bathroom feel warmer and more inviting. Lighter colors will brighten a bathroom and darker tones will tend to create a more relaxing environment.

Floors make a great place to add simple designs as well such as checkerboard patterns or repetitive designs. Choosing tile designs appropriate for the era of a home, such as small art deco-inspired tiles for a 20’s or 30’s style, can complement an older home and add to its overall design continuity.

Tile Showers

Using tile in showers adds another dimension to a bathroom remodel. Tile is fairly easy to keep clean and holds up well in wet conditions. There are infinite design ideas for using tile in a shower.

A classic use is to create a mosaic or pattern. White subway tiles look great in showers and will give a clean, modern look. Homeowners can also create designs or images such as ocean waves, beautiful foliage, or other relaxing imagery. Natural stone tiles also work great for showers and bring a spa-like feel to a bathroom.

A new and exciting use of tile in showers is glass tiles. Tiling an entire shower with glass tiles brightens a shower as it catches the light and gives a bathroom a modern edge.

Tile Counters

Tile can really bring a countertop to life and bring a clean look to the bathroom. Counters are also a great place to get creative in a bathroom, since these surfaces don’t see the kind of use that a kitchen counter does.

Choose large tiles to reduce the number of grout lines if cleaning grout is a concern. There are also a wide variety of colored grouts available that not only complement different shades of tile, but also make cleaning less of an issue.

When installing countertops, include a decorative backsplash. Mosaic designs, subway tiles, and thinner, horizontal tiles work well on backsplashes and create a nice focal point in the bathroom.

Incorporating tile into a bathroom remodel is easy and can add warmth and depth to the room. There are so many ways to bring the versatility and design of tile to a bathroom, whether in the floor, shower or countertops, that every homeowner should consider adding tile to their remodeling project.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to do the techniques in our Pumpkin Carving with Power Tools video. Download free Pumpkin Carving Templates at the bottom of this post.

At Mr. Handyman, safety comes first and the same goes for using power tools at home. Wear your safety goggles, follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for the tool, and make sure that power tools are only used by an adult.

1. Cutting Off a Lid with a Jigsaw

To cut off the top, simply plunge the blade into the pumpkin at about a 45 degree angle. Work your way around the pumpkin until the lid is off. This technique is pretty simple and you will find that it is a lot faster than using a kitchen knife.

2. Gutting a Pumpkin with a Drill and a Pumpkin Gutter

Purchase a pumpkin gutter.

Insert gutter into your drill and tighten.

We found that it works best if you move the spinning head in a clockwise motion.

Large pumpkins may clog the head. Simply remove gutter from drill, clean out the pumpkin flesh and start again. Even if you have to clean the head once or twice, this method is much faster than cleaning with a spoon.

If you use a drill to make holes in your pumpkin, the gutter can also be used to go back and clean loose bits caused by the drilling. Your pumpkin will have a nice clean finished look with perfect, unclogged holes.

3. Creating Circular Patterns Using a Drill and Spade Bit

In the video, we made two pumpkins using spade bits.

The first pumpkin was made using a vertical series of holes around the pumpkin.

Take a ruler or tape measure and mark a dot every two inches around your pumpkin at the widest part.

Next, turn your ruler or measuring tape 90 degrees and mark a dot every inch on both sides for each of the dots that run around the circumference. The number of dots will depend on your pumpkin.

Once all the holes are marked, insert a ¾” spade bit into your drill. Drill a ¾” hole in all of the dots around the widest part of your pumpkin.

Next, remove the ¾” spade bit and insert a ⅝” spade bit. With the ⅝” bit, you will drill holes directly above and below each ¾” hole.

You will continue to decrease the bit size incrementally for each hole you step away from the center, so that the largest holes run around the widest part of your pumpkin and the smallest holes are at the top and bottom of your pumpkin.

4. Making Perfectly Circular Eyes with a Drill and Coring Bit

Coring bits are a great way to make perfectly circular eyes. Simply insert the coring bit into your drill, make marks on the pumpkin so that the eyes are spaced evenly.
You can also use coring bits in combination with spade bits to make intriguing circular patterns.

5. Using Linoleum Cutters for Fine Detail Work and Tracing

To do fine detail work and to carve intricate designs, linoleum cutters are the perfect tool. Purchase linoleum cutters if you don’t already have them in your toolbox.

The best bet for making an intricate design is to print out a pattern and then use a thumbtack or other small needle to mark the pattern onto the pumpkin.
Go back and use either the blade tool, or the finest v-tip to cut out the outline of your pattern.
Once the outline is marked, you can use the larger tips to remove sections of pumpkin skin.

6. Using a Woodworking Chisel to Remove Large Sections of Skin

Large woodworking chisels are great for removing the top layer of skin or for removing larger areas of a design.

Outline your design with a linoleum cutter, knife, or other tool that will remove a small section of pumpkin skin around the outside edge of your design.

Place the tip of the woodworking chisel underneath the skin and push away from the outside edge of your design.

Many homeowners are so overwhelmed with simply the thought of cleaning out the garage that it remains in disarray for years. Here’s how to reclaim your garage in only one weekend, by using this simple three-step program.

1. Sort and Clean

Sift through all the items in your garage and sort them into categories such as garden tools, sports equipment, tools, holiday decorations, cleaners, paint, items to sell/donate and, finally, trash. If you’ve been thinking of a new surface for your garage floor, now would be the time to do it.

2. Install an Organisational System

Measure the space you have available for storage and install an easy-to-erect shelving or storage system. Mr. Handyman can assist in the assembly of all storage systems.

3. Organise, Hang and Put Away

Now that your organizational system is in place, it’s time to organise, hang and put things away. Plan to store frequently used items closest to the garage’s point-of-entry door. Affix wall hooks and hang all those garden tools that once cluttered the garage floor. Bulky items such as lawnmowers and snow blowers can be stored beneath the items hanging from the wall. Store like items in bins that fit your shelving unit. Consider overhead storage racks which can hold a surprising amount of weight to create new storage space. Store infrequently used items, such as holiday Garage Organisation with pegboard for toolsdecorations, up high or in a back corner. If you follow steps 1, 2 and 3, by Sunday afternoon you just may be able to park your car in the garage.

No place in a home gets cluttered as quickly as the garage. What starts out as a space for storage and your car can quickly turn into a tangle of tools, garden equipment, and rarely used household goods. Using shelves strategically is a simple way to get the clutter under control, and with the many varieties of shelves on the market, it’s easy to find the right shelving unit to fit your needs.

Free Standing Shelves
Probably the most prevalent kind of garage shelving is the free standing unit made from wire, steel or plastic. You can find these shelves in just about any home improvement or house goods store. They’re easy to assemble, relatively inexpensive, and come in a wide variety of sizes. You can also easily customize them with removable bins, baskets, and hanging baskets. Some free standing shelves come on casters making them easy to move around. The downside to store bought shelves is that they only come in a few stock sizes and it can be difficult to find bins to fit the shelf spaces exactly.

Adjustable Shelves
Another great option for garage shelves is adjustable shelving. These usually come with a set of rails mounted to the wall or inserted into feet brackets. You can easily adjust these shelves to fit the things you need to store, or to fit the storage bins you want to use. If you don’t have free wall space, or garage walls suitable for mounting rails, adjustable shelves may not work for your home.

Reduce & Reuse
Consider turning old kitchen or bathroom cabinets into your new garage cabinets. Those old cabinets may have gone out of style for your home but easily become useful storage space in a garage. Reusing shelves isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as installing new shelves, though, and they are difficult to customize.

Custom Shelves
Of course, having shelves custom-built by a professional handyman to suit your needs is ideal. You can choose your own materials, build around structural oddities in a garage, and get exactly the kind of storage you need and want. Custom-built shelves last a long time and are very sturdy. You can also have the shelves built to the exact measurements to fit the bins, boxes and drawers that best keep your garage organized.

Any shelving option you choose will help keep a cluttered garage in check. Explore your options and find the best shelving unit for your needs.

Mr. Handyman can maintain your home to save you money. One call really does take care of everything on your to-do list. All Mr. Handyman franchises are Fully Insured.
